My name is Jeff. Since 1996 I’ve designed and typeset several hundred books, primarily for independent and renegade publishers like AK Press, Flood Editions, Wave Books, Kelsey Street Press, and University of Minnesota Press. My first decade in design was spent at a studio in Oakland; after work I’d moonlight under the name Quemadura, and from 2007 until early 2019 I worked full-time under that name. I was a member of RAW from its inception until its conclusion last year, and roughly a third of my workweek is devoted to pro bono design for radical collectives and movements. Crisis is a studio name chosen to befit this calling, evocative as it is of decision-making, judgment, and turning points.
This studio doesn’t operate like a normative design firm. My primary clients are on the margins of the publishing world, and they pay on a sliding scale, which allows me to design (and sometimes publish) books in a way that attempts to evade convention as well as market influences and pieties.
It’s not often I can take on new clients, but please feel welcome to write me with proposals. If what you’re looking for isn’t book design/typography, my collaborator Ashanti Africana is well-situated to handle your time-based media needs.
